Technical translators’ exchange at Wessex Translations @ Wessex Translations Ltd.
Jun 7 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Technical translators' exchange at Wessex Translations @ Wessex Translations Ltd.

Helping translators to be effective when carrying out technical translations. Identifying resources. An exploration of what constitutes ‘technical translation’, its forms and formats, its originators and users, its functions and purposes.

We will be attempting to share understandings on the following questions:

– What type of technical documents do we all translate?
– What constitutes a technical or scientific translation?
– Where do we get our work from?
– Simplified Technical English (STE) – what exactly is it?
– Technical vs linguistic skills?
– What specific events or societies exist for your source and target languages?
– What dictionaries do people use?
– What other websites are useful?
– Any other specific tips or tricks
– Particular issues or bugbears.

We will look at 3 topics: document types & targets; languages & special knowledge; resources & issues… and anything else that crops up.

We are grateful to Wessex Translations for making their facilities available.

The exchange will be preceded by lunch at the Bear & Ragged Staff, Stoneymarsh House, Staff Rd, Michelmersh, Romsey SO51 0LB at 12 noon.

Engaging with the profession series - "Meet the Translation and Interpreting Professionals" at Portsmouth University @ Room 2.07 - School of Languages and Applied Linguistics, University of Portsmouth

Although this event is principally aimed at students, it is open to all.
It will be filmed for distance learners.

Three members of the ITI Wessex group who run successful local translation and interpreting businesses will be making themselves available for a panel discussion around these kinds of topics:

How do students bridge the no-experience barrier when seeking to start a translation career?

How is Brexit likely to impact upon translators and interpreters in the UK in the coming 5 years?

What are the benefits from being a member of a professional association?

Is there any advice for getting into freelance translation, particularly in terms of income and sourcing work?

How does one create a CV? What important things should you write down?

What are the first steps to take to establish a translation agency?

Students have been asked to formulate other questions likely to be of interest to them.

POSTPONED

At this one-day event we will be celebrating our profession in a different, innovative and informal way. There will be a number of sessions throughout the day, each planned and run by the contributors themselves. They’ll all be different in approach and format and this will give the day a unique flavour, based around the sharing and building of ideas.

Contributors to the day include our Networks and Regional Groups, as well as Friends of ITI like MET, the ATC and the University of Bristol – all coming together in celebration of Translation and Interpreting.

The day-time sessions will be followed by an evening dinner where the ITI Awards will be presented.

Tickets are priced at £99 for ITI members and £119 for non-ITI members, giving you entrance to the day-time event and the evening dinner. Ticket numbers are limited. To book, go to https://itiandfriends.org.uk.
