Hosted by Gill Holmes. The text will consist of the first (approx.) 400 words from El País bajo mi Piel by Gioconda Belli (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gioconda_Belli). Written in 2000, it’s an autobiographical work about Gioconda’s early life and time with the FSLN (Sandinistas), first fighting to overthrow the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua and then working as Minister of Culture in the new government, with musings on feminine sexuality, motherhood and sexism thrown in. Gioconda is a well-known Nicaraguan poet and writer who currently divides her time between Nicaragua and the USA. It has been translated into English and we will compare our translations with the published version during the slam.
